Gottfried Gassner is a partner in the Corporate/M&A and Restructuring Team and has more than 20 years of experience in these areas.

He focuses on

Gottfried is recognised by Legal 500 (2024) as a "leading individual" in the field of Insolvency and Restructuring; he is listed by Chambers Europe 2024 as one of the leading lawyers and in the IFLR1000 Edition 2023 as a "highly regarded lawyer".

Gottfried studied law in Innsbruck (Mag. iur. 2000) and economics at Marquette University in Milwaukee (USA) and in Innsbruck (Mag. rer. soc. oec. 2002).

He began his career at Binder Grösswang in 2007 and has been ­– interrupted by a secondment at De Brauw Blackstone Westbroek in Amsterdam – with the firm since then.

Gottfried is a regular speaker at conferences and seminars,  among others at the Vienna University of Economics and Business Administration and the Danube University Krems, former co-editor of the journal of the IBA Insolvency Section "Insolvency and Restructuring International" (2017-2018), and author of numerous publications on corporate and insolvency law.

He is a member of IBA, Officer of IBA Insolvency Section, member of INSOL Europe (Country Coordinator for Austria), ReTurn - Forum for Restructuring and Turnaround Management and VGR - Wissenschaftliche Vereinigung für Unternehmens- und Gesellschaftsrecht.

  • Advisor to Lafayette Mittelstand Capital on the carve-out of the elevator business from Gebauer & Griller group
  • Advising the international creditors’ Co-ordinating Committee consisting of major banks and investment funds in the restructuring of Steinhoff group
  • Advice in connection with the restructuring of the Austrian Volksbank sector, in particular regarding more than 30 mergers to establish Volksbank Wien, Volksbank Niederösterreich, Volksbank Oberösterreich, Volksbank Steiermark and Volksbank Tirol
  • Advice of Austrian Post in relation to the acquisition of a majority shareholding in Brüll Kallmus Bank AG (now bank99 AG)

  • Advising the Verwaltungsgenossenschaft der start:gruppe regarding pre-sale corporate restructuring measures in connection with the sale of 100% of the shares in start:bausparkasse and IMMO-BANK
  • Advising the Czech construction group Metrostav in connection with the acquisition of ALPINE BeMo Tunnelling GmbH after the bankruptcy of ALPINE BAU GmbH
  • Cross-border merger of BKS Bank dd (Croatia) to BKS Bank AG
  • Cross-border merger of Kommunalkredit International Bank (Cyprus) to KA Finanz AG
  • Advice in connection with squeeze-out projects, among others squeeze-out with Böhler Uddeholm after take-over by voestalpine AG
